Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea
Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea
A list of the most popular books of all time must include something from the science fiction master Jules Verne, who also penned Around the World in Eighty Days and Journey to the Center of the Earth. In this tale, the Atlantic Ocean is plagued by the presence of a strange monster. Harpoonist Ned Land joins marine biologist Aronnax and his servant, Conseil, in order to track down and kill the sea creature. However, the task is not as simple as it seems. In their journeys, they encounter the vengeful Captain Nemo and his submarine vessel, the Nautilus.
In the freedom of the vast ocean, Aronnax and the others see beauties of the sea that they never could have fathomed. Unfortunately, while Nemo battles with the captivity of his own rage, the others are trapped physically aboard the submarine.
About :
Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea: Vingt mille lieues sous les mers: Tour du monde sous-marin is a classic science fiction adventure novel by French writer Jules Verne.
The novel was originally formatted from March 1869 until June 1870 in Pierre Jules Hetzel's fortnightly periodical, Magasin d'éducation et de récréation. A deluxe edition of the octavo, published by Hetzel in November 1871, included 111 illustrations by Alphonse de Nouvel and Edward Rio. It is considered one of Verne's first adventure novels and one of Verne's greatest works, along with Around the World in Eighty Days and Journey to the Center of the Earth. Its depiction of Captain Nemo's underwater ship, the Nautilus, is seen as ahead of its time because it accurately describes many features of today's submarines, which in the 1860s were relatively primitive ships.
A model of the French submarine Plongeur (launched in 1863) was photographed at the 1867 Exposition Universelle, which Jules Verne examined and drew inspiration from when he wrote his novel.
