Murmel, Murmel, Murmel
Murmel, Murmel, Murmel
This book began with the word “murmel,” as Munsch claims he just loved the sound of it. When Robin discovers a baby in her sandbox who can only say “murmel, murmel, murmel,” she realizes she must find it a good home—but who would make the ideal parent?
About
The Murmel Murmel was so weird because it started with the words "Murmel Murmel Murmel," which I thought of as I was washing my face one morning. It was a really funny word and I thought it would work well in the story, so I started looking for the right one. Well, what I came up with is the book.
Murmel is actually about adoption. I made it up just as we were adopting our first son, Andrew. The little girl in the book, Robin, was a neighbor who was also adopted. That's why I used it in the story. And the truck driver who eventually has the baby is actually me because at the time I was adopting a baby.
I liked the idea of a man having a baby because after we adopted Andrew I would stay home with him, but no one would believe I was actually at home taking care of a baby. They'll say "Oh no, you're already working on your writing. We know guys don't stay home and take care of the kids." That's why I wanted the truck driver to have the baby at the end of the book.
