About:
Bridge to Terabithia is a book about two children named Leslie and Jesse who create a magical jungle kingdom in their imaginations. The novel was written by Catherine Patterson and published by Thomas Crowell in 1977. In 1978, she won the Newbery Medal. Patterson's novel was inspired by a true event that occurred in August 1974 when the Thunderbolt died her son's friend.
The novel tells the story of fifth grader Jesse Aarons, who befriends his new neighbor, Leslie Burke after losing her introduction to her at school. Leslie is a tomboy from a wealthy family, and Jesse thinks of her highly. Jesse is an artistic boy from a poor family, who at first was frightened and angry. After meeting Leslie, his life changed. He becomes brave and learns to let go of his frustration. The two children created a kingdom for themselves, which Leslie called "Terabithia".
The novel's content has been a frequent target of censorship and appears at number eight on the American Library Association's list of the 100 most frequently challenged books of the decade 1990-2000.
It was adapted for the screen twice: a 1985 TV movie by PBS and a 2007 feature film by Disney/Walden Media.
