Anne of Green Gables is a 1908 novel by Canadian author Lucy Maud Montgomery (published as LM Montgomery). Written for all ages, it has been considered a classic children's novel since the mid-20th century. Set in the late 19th century, the novel recounts the adventures of Anne Shirley, an 11-year-old orphaned girl who is accidentally sent to two middle-aged brothers, Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert, who originally intended to adopt a boy who helped them on their farm in The fictional town of Avonlea in Prince Edward Island, Canada. The novel tells how Anne makes her way through life with the Cuthberts, at school, and within town.

Since its publication, Anne of Green Gables has been translated into at least 36 languages ​​and has sold over 50 million copies, making it one of the best sellers worldwide. The first is an anthology series, Montgomery wrote several sequels, and since her death, another sequel has been published, as well as a licensed prequel. The original book is taught to students all over the world.

The book has been adapted as films, television films, animated television series, and live action. Musicals and plays have also been created, with annual productions in Europe and Japan.
