A Wrinkle in Time
A Wrinkle in Time
Madeleine L’Engle’s 1963 novel broke barriers, combining the worlds of young adult literature and science fiction. Meg Murry is a smart and stubborn girl, determined to discover the reason behind her scientist father’s disappearance. She gets in over her head when she finds a tesseract—a wrinkle in time—that allows her to travel through time and space.
Though the book is widely understood to have strong religious and Christian undertones, its inclusions of witchcraft and fantasy made A Wrinkle in Time one of the most challenged books, according to the American Library Association. But, in our opinion, that’s what makes it worth reading. It also made A Wrinkle in Time a prime candidate for the 2018 movie adaptation, but sadly, it couldn’t live up to the magic in the book.
About:
A Wrinkle in Time is an adult novel by American author Madeleine L'Engle. The book was first published in 1962, won the Newbery Medal, the Sequoia Book Award, the Lewis Carroll Shelf Award, and was runner-up to the Hans Christian Andersen Prize. The main characters - Meg Murray, Charles Wallace Murray, and Calvin O'Keefe - embark on a journey through space and time, from galaxy to galaxy, as they seek to save Maurice's father and the world. The novel offers a glimpse into the war between light and darkness, and good and evil, as young characters mature into adolescence on their journey. The novel grapples with questions of spirituality and purpose, as characters are often thrown into struggles of love, divinity, and goodness. It is the first book in L'Engle's Time Quintet, which follows Morris and Calvin O'Keefe.
L'Engle designed the Murry family on its own. Scholar Bernice E. Cullinan notes that Langel created characters that "share a joy with a mixed fantasy and sci-fi environment." So the novel's scientific and religious undertones largely reflect L'Engle's life.
The book inspired two film adaptations, both produced by Disney: a 2003 television movie directed by John Kent Harrison, and a 2018 theatrical film directed by Ava DuVernay.
